As the old adage goes, “the best things in life are free.” I firmly believe this truth is rooted in our relationship with God. I believe true fulfillment and happiness can’t be bought or sold. Instead, they are rooted in our relationship with God and the gifts He freely offers us – salvation, His unconditional love, and joy that transcends circumstances.
In stark contrast, today’s society often peddles a different narrative. We’re led to believe that happiness and contentment can be purchased, that the key to fulfillment lies in accumulating wealth and material possessions. But I’ve come to realize that this mindset is fundamentally flawed. True happiness can’t be found in the things of this world; it can only be found in the presence and love of our Almighty God.
Today was one of the most blessed days I’ve ever experienced. As I’ve learned to view life through the lens of God’s infinite blessings, I’ve discovered that I experience far more “best days ever.” On a whim, my family and I packed up the kids, some snacks, and our dog, and headed to the beach.
During the car ride, we marveled at God’s miraculous creation. We took turns naming the incredible things we saw: the ocean, flowers, and cows. It was an impromptu Sunday school lesson, filled with wonder and awe.
As we spent hours exploring the beach, we paid no mind to the time. Instead, we focused on the sound of the waves, which came without fail, just like the morning sunlight and God’s faithfulness.
If we can trust that the sun will rise again tomorrow, surely, we can depend on God to be just as faithful. Yet, it’s easy to forget the evidence of God’s presence all around us – in a flower, a seashell, or the wind.
We believe in the wind, though we can’t see it. Can’t we also believe in a God who may not be visible, but whose blessings are apparent everywhere?
Let’s forget about “coincidence” and “luck.” Instead, let’s start recognizing God’s hand at work in our lives. What faith, clarity, and peace can come from a day that costs nothing but the gas to get there?
My day was filled to the brim with happiness, and I didn’t need to swipe my card once. Try it for yourself: find a field, trail, lake, or shore, and look for the evidence of God’s creation. Forget about time and view the moment through the binoculars of faith.
I know someone who once had everything they ever wanted. Their motto was “Cash is King.” But despite their wealth, they were one of the unhappiest people I’ve ever met.
Cash is not king. Jesus is King. Jesus is the key to happiness, something that money cannot buy and is available to all. Praise God for this beautiful truth.
